The current American education system is a long ways off from the colonial classical and Christian education tutors and later one room school teachers provided. America took the an uncharted route during the mid 1840’s with Horace Mann at the helm, but the fulcrum point occurred when John Dewey accepted the position of chairman of the Department of Philosophy, Psychology and Pedagogy at the University of Chicago’s laboratory School in 1894.
Education expert Samuel L. Blumenfeld (1991) notes:
Here was indeed a master plan, involving the entire progressive educational community, to create a new socialist curriculum for schools of America. A plan that was indeed carried out and implemented…he put forth his collectivist concepts of an organic society, the social individual, the down grading of academics, and the need to use psychology in education.1
Dewey is known by all whom work the education field. His pedagogic creed can be summed up by his own words:
I believe that education, therefore, is a process of living and not a preparation for future living; I believe that education is the regulation of the process of coming to share in the social consciousness; and that adjustment of individual activity on the basis of this social consciousness is the only sure method of social reconstruction…I believe that every teacher is a social servant set apart for the maintenance of proper social order and the securing of the right social growth. I believe that in this way the teacher always is the prophet of the true God and the usher in of the true kingdom of God.2
For over a century, we have been running an experiment in our schools, trying to find out what a nation looks like without the Judeo-Christian God. Now we know.
Why this podcast? As Martin Luther once said, “If we are correct and right in our Christian life at every point, but refuse to stand for truth at a particular point where the battle rages—then we are traitors to Christ.”3 Parents and grandparents must understand ‘their school’ (the public school that didn’t hurt them) doesn’t exist any longer. They must recognize is was ‘their school’ which produced the seed that now has blossomed into a humanistic fruit-bearing tree. The history of what happened to education in America must be taught and now the war must be fought, even as the sun is setting on America.
